TREASURE ISLAND - A BRIEF HISTORY AND A LOOK TO THE FUTURE
As the host of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, Treasure Island's 403 acres is one of the world's largest man-made island. When the U.S. entered WWII, Treasure Island was converted to a U.S. naval base. In the 1990's with many military base closures, Treasure Island was returned to the city of San Francisco for reuse. Under the auspices of the Treasure Island Development Authority, the John Stewart Company manages over 600 homes, composed of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom units.
The city of San Francisco currently has plans for a far-reaching program for development of the island which will include homes for around 30,000 residents, commercial and retail spaces.
